IFS is a psychotherapeutic approach that views the mind as naturally made up of multiple parts, each with its own unique perspectives, feelings, and roles. Developed by Dr. Richard C. Schwartz in the 1980s, IFS is based on the idea that these inner parts form a system that resembles a family, where each part has its own purpose and interacts with other parts in complex ways.
IFS is a non-pathologizing approach that views all parts as having a positive intention, even if their behaviors are problematic. It emphasizes inner healing, self-compassion, and self-leadership, making it a widely used and effective therapy for a range of issues, including trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship problems.
In Jungian terms, Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy can be understood by viewing the "parts" as complexes and the "Self" as the Self Archetype.
By understanding IFS in Jungian terms, we can see that both approaches aim at integrating the various parts of the psyche and healing through connection with a central organizing principle—the Self or the Self Archetype.
